This four tiered blue orchid wedding cake was made of all Guinness chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling. This was the first time I tried frosting a cake with a rustic texture to the buttercream and I thought it came out perfect for the event.
The wedding was held at the Inn at Mill Race pond in a beautiful outdoor tent. Unfortunately it was pouring rain all day so delivering this cake was a bit of a challenge, but we made it! A very kind groomsman (in a kilt) helped us by holding a very large umbrella over the cake as we carried it from the car to the tent.
The blue orchids were all handmade out of gumpaste and the vines were made of floral wire covered in floral tape. The bride really wanted the branches to have a 3D effect and not lay flat against the cake which is why I opted to use the wire instead of fondant. The owl bride and groom topper were also handmade and customized with a top hat and cane for the groom and a blue flower bouquet for the bride. If you like the owls check out my tutorial on how to make them yourself, or you can order them from my Etsy shop.
